Gallipoli Songs competition

ABC Classic FM and Radio New Zealand Concert extend an invitation to Australian and New Zealand composers to submit a new vocal composition that sets words from texts written by participants in the Gallipoli campaign. Philip Neill Memorial Prize in Music

The Prize is awarded annually by the University of Otago, for excellence in original composition. In 2014 it is valued at $1500.

The competition is open to all past and present students of the
universities of New Zealand.

The topic for 2014 is a work for oboe or soprano saxophone or alto saxophone and piano.

The work must be at least eight minutes and not more than eighteen minutes in duration.

When submitting your score, please also submit a midi recording of the work on disk.

Applications close with the University on 1 July 2014.

Australian and New Zealand Viola Society Composition Competition 2014

Entries are invited for the 2014 ANZVS Viola Composition Competition.

Aim: To promote composition and performance of new viola works in Australia and New Zealand.

Conditions of Entry:

  1. The composer must be a resident or citizen of Australia or New Zealand.
  2. Categories:
    • Viola Solo (unaccompanied)
    • Two or more violas (violas only)

    Composers may submit one entry in each category.

  3. Pieces are to be up to five minutes duration.
  4. The composition must indicate metronome markings and duration.
  5. The composition must not have been previously performed in public, or previously published, nor may it be a transcription in part or whole of another work that has been previously published or performed.
  6. The manuscript must be easily legible on unbound single-sided A4 sheets and suitable for scanning. The composer must be identified on the manuscript itself by a nom-de-plume to ensure anonymity.

    The composer’s details are to be included on the attached entry form and sealed in a separate envelope to accompany the manuscript. The nom-de-plume must be written on the outside of this envelope.

  7. The original manuscripts with three photocopies, three soundfiles on CD or DVD (synthesised renditions acceptable) and for multiple viola works one set of parts or a PDF file of parts of the work must be sent to:

    Entries must be received by 9th May 2014.

  8. Judging: ANZVS has appointed a panel of three adjudicators with a range of experience in composition and performance on the viola. The panel’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  9. Prizes: $200 in prize money for each category.

    One additional prize of $100 will be awarded for best composition in either category written by a composer studying at secondary school or equivalent in 2013.

    The adjudicators reserve the right not to award a prize in any of the three categories.

  10. Winners will be announced at the Auckland Viola Convention 7th- 8th June, 2014 (date to be confirmed). The winning, highly commended compositions and entries from composers who attend the weekend will then be performed in a workshop setting.
  11. Results will be published in the next issue of the ANZVS Journal after the prize-giving.
  12. Printing and Copyright
    Though the copyright of their work remains with the composer, it is a condition of entry that the composers of the winning works (with the composer’s real name acknowledged) allow the
    ANZVS to publish the works in the ANZVS Journal.
  13. Manuscripts and Photocopies
    Manuscripts and photocopies will be retained to be used in workshops at the Auckland Viola Convention. At all times copyright remains with the composer.

Organ Composition Contest

Encouraged by the great success of the first contests, the Catholic Parish of Saarlouis-Lisdorf has decided to organise, with the kind assistance of the town of Saarlouis, a 7. contest for Organ Compositions this year. The compositions considered  admissible to the contest are those written for organ and a solo instrument chosen by the composer, organ and voice chosen by the composer, or organ and a solo instrument with voice chosen by the composer.The registered association for the  promotion of music “Förderverein Klingende Kirche Saarlouis-Lisdorf” is the official organiser.The general terms, rules and conditions of the contest, the Jury, as well as the prizes, may be consulted at our internet-addresses www.klingende-kirche.de or  www.saarlouiser-orgeltage.de.

Call for Score – Risuonanze 2014

Associazione Culturale TKE is calling for pieces to be performed at the “Risuonanze 2014 – incontri di nuove musiche” Festival (early June, 2014, Friuli Venezia Giulia – Italy). The Call is open to composers of any nationality and age. Pieces should be 2 to 6 minutes in duration and can be written for solo piano, or solo flute [C Flute, and/or Piccolo, and/or G flute, one only player], or solo oboe, or solo trombone, or solo harp, or solo toy-piano [Schoenhut Traditional Spinet – 25 keys, range: C2 to C4], or solo voice [mezzo-soprano, range: F3 to F5 (piano dynamics) or Ab5 (forte dynamics)], or voice [mezzo-soprano, range as before] and piano; use of tape and/or electronics is not allowed. The submitted works should not have been premiered in public performances before the Festival.

Festival “Risuonanze 2014” is based on the direct relationship between composers and audience, so composers attending the performances are much appreciated. Yvar Mikhashoff Pianist/Composer Commissioning Project

The Yvar Mikhashoff Trust for New Music is pleased to announce the guidelines for the seventh annual international competition for pianist/composer collaborations. The goal of the competition is to encourage the composition and performance of new works for solo piano reflecting and continuing the legacy of the distinguished American pianist, Yvar Mikhashoff (1941-1993). The winning composer and pianist, who apply together as a team, will receive $3,000 each. The composer will write a new piece for piano solo, with or without electronics; this work will then be premiered by the pianist between January and September 2015. The competition is limited to applicants, both pianists and composers, born on or after January 1, 1979. Armenian Little Singers International Competition for Composers 2014

The Armenian Little Singers International Association is organizing an international competition (ACCC) for choral compositions

1. Choral compositions with or without piano accompaniment for the “Little Singers of Armenia” advanced children’s choir (S, S, A or S, S, A, A – for 3 or 4 voices).

2. The participation is open to composers from any country; age should be over 20 years.

3. Duration must be 3-4 minutes. Arrangements are not accepted.

4. Submission of the PDF version of the score is accepted only by email alsccc@hotmail.com by the 15th of December, 2013.
Each score should contain a statement written by the composer declaring that the submitted score is unpublished, has never been performed before and is written for the purposes of this competition.

PIERROT LUNAIRE INTERNATIONAL COMPOSITION COMPETITION

The Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien announce the PIERROT LUNAIRE INTERNATIONAL COMPOSITION COMPETITION 2014. Composers from all over the world – are invited to present works for the Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien. Created on an initiative of the Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien the Pierrot Lunaire International Composition Competition 2014 will launch its edition during the 2014-2015 seasons.

This competition for chamber works will be open to composers of all nationalities, with no age restrictions. Its aim is to encourage and promote musical creation while developing lasting ties between the Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien and the composers of today and, in this way, actively contribute to a renewal of the chamber repertoire.

Prize for the winning Composition:

1. Prize: Euro 5.000, – and minimum three performances by the Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien. during its 2014-2015 international concert tour season. Additionally, the Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien could create a list of pieces which it suggests for performance along with the prize-winning pieces during the 2014-2015 international concert tour season.

AL QUDS COMPOSITION AWARD 2013

Please find attached some information about this year’s Al Quds Composition Award launched by the new Al Quds University College of Music Project.

The Award was successfully introduced for the first time in 2012 with participants from all around the world. First winner was the Austrian composer Stefan Heckel with his musical creation inspired by Meena Alexander’s poem “Impoossible Grace”.

This year the award aims to encourage again the creation of high quality chamber music works, which include elements of Oriental and/or Western European music combined with human voice.
Participants will have the chance to choose between an Arabic or English version of the poem “Qais, Majnoun Laila” by the internationally renowned Palestinian poet Mahmoud Abu Hashash.

Harp Composition Competition

The University of Waikato Conservatorium of Music, in conjunction with The Harp Society of New Zealand, is pleased to announce acompetition for a new composition for harp. The winning composition will be performed as part of New Zealand’s contribution to the World Harp Congress to be held in Sydney in July 2014. http://whcsydney2014.com. A first prize of NZ$1000 will awarded to the winning entry by the Harp Society of New Zealand.
