Chamber Music New Zealand Commissioning Prize

Chamber Music New Zealand invites entries for the inaugural CMNZ Commissioning Prize.

CMNZ is looking to commission a New Zealand composer who has not been commissioned by CMNZ before to write a new piece to be toured by a group in the 2022 Regional Series. CMNZ will work with the successful composer and the ensembles on the 2022 roster to find a collaboration that is pleasurable and beneficial to all.

Award: An 8–10 minute commission premiered and toured by a group in the CMNZ 2022 Regional Series. The fee will align with CANZ guidelines.

Eligibility: The prize will be awarded to a composer who has not been commissioned by CMNZ before. New Zealand composers, including NZ-born composers now based overseas and composers born overseas now living in Aotearoa will be considered.

ISCM World New Music Days 2021

CALL FOR WORKS

We are pleased to announce the official Call for Works for the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) World New Music Days 2021. Members are invited to submit scores/projects for the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) World New Music Days 2021, taking place in Shanghai and Nanning from September 17 – 20, 2021 (Shanghai) and September 21 – 25, 2021 (Nanning). CANZ Members should make their submissions to info@canz.net.nz by 1 March 2021 to be considered for inclusion in the Official Submission. 

OFFICIAL SUBMISSIONS

For Sections and Full Associate Members of the ISCM, the official submission will comprise six (6) works across at least four (4) of the twelve (12) different Score Categories identified in this Call for Works. For an official submission to be eligible each submitted work must be eligible, the durations specified for each work must be accurate, and the submitted works correctly aligned with the relevant category. Assuming the submission is eligible and the ISCM member is in good standing (2020 Annual Report completed and annual 2020 membership fee paid) we guarantee that at least one of the submitted works will be presented during the ISCM World New Music Days 2021.

For Affiliated Associate Members, an official submission will comprise up to three (3) works. While there is no guarantee that any particular work will be selected, the organizer will strive to include them where possible.

INDIVIDUAL SUBMISSIONS

Individual Submissions must be submitted by an independent composer or a composer’s authorized representative. Submissions will be accepted from January 18, 2021 at www.iscm.org. An entry fee of €53.05 applies to Individual Submissions, payable at the time of submission by PayPal through the ISCM website.

Individual Submissions are not guaranteed a performance. Space for Individual Submissions is limited, but all submissions will be considered. Please promote this information via your networks.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

Priority will be given to works within the recommended duration for each category. Furthermore, priority will be given to works written since 2012. Only one work per composer may be submitted, by either Individual submission or Official submission.

By submitting works to this Call, composers are agreeing that if their work is selected for performance/presentation, they automatically grant permission for the ISCM performance/presentation of their work to be recorded, broadcast, and streamed from the website without additional financial liability to the ISCM or the Festival Organizers.

Information required for each Work to be submitted is:

  3. Composers may choose any combination of 6 – 14 among the above instruments, but at least 1 must be included from Dizi, Erhu or Pipa.

  6. The list of percussion instruments is attached at the end of Call for Works.

Category VI: Choir Works (SATB)

  1. Works shorter than 5 minutes will be given priority.
  2. It can be a capella. If not, the only instrument that can be included is piano.
  3. Extended piano techniques will not be accepted.

Category VII: Solo Piano Works

  1. Works shorter than 8 minutes will be given priority.
  2. Extended techniques allowed on piano, performers are allowed to play inside the piano.
  3. Prepared piano works will not be accepted.

Category VIII: Percussion Works

  1. Works shorter than 8 minutes will be given priority.

Category XI : Electronic Music (Live Electronics Only)

  1. Only one (1) Operator is allowed for live performance.
  2. It is recommended that the Composer or the operator bring their own laptop for the live performance. Only 1 laptop is allowed in the performance.
  3. No instrument can be linked to the electronics in this Category. The work can have maximum 8 channels, and the composer must supply a diagram showing the speaker layout.
  4. Any special sensor or devices that the composer used should be brought to the performance by themselves. We don’t provide any kind of sensor or trigger devices.
  5. If the composer needs to use our Mac or PC for performance, the only software we can provide is Max-MSP. We strongly recommend you bring your own laptop.

Category XII: Electronic Music (Live Electronics with 1 instrumentalist)

  1. The performance allows only 1 operator and 1 instrumentalist in this Category.
  2. Only one instrument may be selected from following instruments: Flute; Oboe; Clarinet;Bassoon; Horn; Trumpet; Trombone; Violin; Viola; Violoncello; Dizi; Erhu; or Pipa.
  3. The selected instrument can be linked to the electronics. But the sensor or any linked devices should be provided by the composer.
  4. We strongly recommend that the devices that the composer provides are common and universal, with connecting ports such as USB2.0, USB3.0, USB-C or any audio port.Bluetooth is recommended for any wireless connections.
  5. We suggest the Composer or the operator brings their own laptop for the live performance.Only 1 laptop allowed in the performance.
  6. The work can have maximum 8 channels, and the composer must supply a diagram showing the preferred speaker layout.

Wellington Jazz Festival announces four exciting jazz commission opportunities

Submissions are now open for four new jazz commissions by New Zealand composers to be presented at a re-scheduled Wellington Jazz Festival, 1822 November 2020.

We know Covid-19 has had a devastating impact on musicians, technicians and many of the Festival’s regular music venues, bars and eateries across the region and country. In response, the Festival has reshaped its planned programme, shifted it to Spring, and is putting its resource and energy into ‘loving local’ – bringing audiences the finest homegrown jazz live in Wellington’s best music spots.

As well as playing at the Festival, one way we can support artists is to invest in them to create new music. This year, we’re providing an increased number of composition and performance opportunities for Aotearoa-New Zealand jazz composers and musicians.

Made possible by support from Creative New Zealand and Todd Corporation, a fee of between $10,000 and $12,500 for each commission will be awarded to composers to create a new piece of jazz music that will premiere at the Wellington Jazz Festival in November. The Festival is committed to inclusion and developing and celebrating the sounds of Aotearoa, and at least one commission will be awarded to a Māori composer.

Submissions are open now and close 5pm, Friday 3 July. The commissions are open to New Zealand-based citizens or residents and will be selected by a panel of jazz experts.

The 36th ACL Festival Young Composers Competition

The Asian Composers League Festival in Christchurch, New Zealand invites works from composers under the age of 30 (born after 2 May 1990) for string trio: violin, viola and cello (or 2 violins and cello). Works should be under 6 minutes in duration.

Call for works: Asian Composers League Festival 2020

We are pleased to announce the official Call for Works for the Asian Composers League Festival 2020. Member organisations are invited to submit scores/projects for the festival, taking place in Christchurch from April 28 – May 2, 2020. For detailed information about the Call for Works, see iscm2020.nz/acl-2020.

CANZ members should email their submissions to president@canz.net.nz no later than August 31, 2019. Late submissions will not be considered. Submissions will only be accepted from CANZ Members. Individual submissions will not be considered.

PLEASE NOTE: A separate call for the ACL Young Composers Competition will be issued in early September.

The 2020 ACL Festival will overlap with the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) World New Music Days, which begins in Auckland on 21 April 2020. Composers wishing to attend the ACL Festival are encouraged to also attend the ISCM World New Music Days: iscm2020.nz.

Speakers are normally positioned as an 8.1 system in a semi-circular array. There is also the possibility of some upper reinforcement from a trio of hanging speakers.

Single screen video is also possible in conjunction with the above.

Works of up to 20 minutes in duration may be considered in this category. 

13. Composer-Performer

Open to composer-performers who work with an expanded approach to composition, artists engaged with the practice of researching and developing new compositional and performative tools which may work in an intersection of the physical, theatrical and visual. This may include performers exploring creation, composer-performer collectives, non-Western instruments, found/built instruments, electronics and extra-musical elements. Composer-Performers are required to bring all necessary materials for the performance, including their own computer with all software and additional hardware as well as all props and any other necessary materials.

Please submit an artist CV in English (up to 2 pages), .pdf description of the work (500 word max), a video of the composer-performer’s work, and a technical rider for the performance.

Works of up to 20 minutes in duration may be considered in this category.

14. Improvising Ensemble

Open to composers-improvisers who may wish to perform with local improvisers (violin, saxophones, percussion and/or keyboards). Composers are requested to send some demo material.

15.  Audiovisual and Installation Works

For gallery/exhibition presentation (i.e. non-concert presentation). Some installations may be positioned in an outdoor environment. Preference will be given to works that bear some relationship to the theme of Music Ecosystems.

Call for Scores and Conference Papers: “Music as play – The toy piano takes the stage”

“Music as play – The toy piano takes the stage”, a two day festival with concerts and conference, is announcing a call for toy piano scores and a call for conference papers.

Call for Scores: 

Composers of any nationality and age are invited to submit newly-composed works for toy piano. Selected works will be premiered during the festival in Como (Italy) by pianist Antonietta Loffredo and then on tour performances in other countries (Spain, Portugal and Australia).

Pieces for solo toy piano (37 key concert grand OR 25 key spinet OR 25 table top) or for toy piano and toy percussion. Up to 5 mins. Application fee of 30 Euros for up to two pieces. Closing date for submissions of scores: 9th December, 2018.

Call for Papers:

Proposals consisting of an abstract of not more than 300 words for spoken papers of 20 minutes. Abstracts are to be submitted in English and the conference language will be English. There is no fee to submit an abstract. Registration fee: 30 Euros. No additional fees for composers who have paid for score/s submission and wish to submit a paper as well.

ISCM World Music Days 2019 in Estonia

The official Call for Works is now released for ISCM’s World Music Days 2019 in Tallinn and Tartu, Estonia. The 2019 event will be held in collaboration with the Estonian Music Days’ 40th Anniversary, 2-10 May 2019.

Choral music is a particular strength of this festival (hence the multiple submission categories dedicated to it), as well as an interest in experiments between music and other artistic disciplines, including the intersections between music and architecture, theatre, audiovisual art, and literature. Also of note is the category for free improvisation, which may interest composer-performers active in this area.

Young composers are also encouraged to apply. Composers up to the age of 35 are eligible for the ISCM Young Composer’s Award, which includes a €5000 prize and a commission for a future ISCM event.

CANZ is the official NZ member (Section) of the ISCM, and will be selecting and submitting six works to the ISCM International Panel for consideration, from which at least one work will be selected for performance at the festival. We now invite members to submit works to CANZ for the initial selection. The deadline for submission to CANZ is Friday 14 September 2018. Please send all materials electronically to <president@canz.net.nz>. Receipt of your submission will be acknowledged.

You must be a current member of CANZ to make a submission to our official NZ entry (if you wish to join CANZ, please see http://canz.net.nz/join-canz/). Preference will be given to works composed after 2013, and to composers who are yet to experience an ISCM WMD festival. The Official Submission from CANZ will aim to include six works fitting at least four of the 14 submission categories. It is essential that you ensure your entry matches the specifications for one of the categories, described below:

The 35th ACL Conference and Festival Young Composers Competition

Duration should be within 8 mins. A work written for a duet of two heterogeneous instruments, from the following – two groups respectively:
Group A: Violin, Viola, Violoncello and Double Bass
Group B: Flute/Picc, Oboe, B ♭ /A Clarinet and Bassoon

NOTE: only duos for one string instrument with one woodwind instrument will be considered.

Each ACL country shall select a Young Composer Representative under the age of 30 (born after
Oct. 19, 1987), and the score should be received by CANZ BEFORE 26 February 2018.

IMPORTANT
Each applicant can submit up to 2 compositions. When a composition is selected to be performed
in the festival, the applicant needs to provide a score and parts at no charge, and is responsible for clearing all the performance-related rights of the piece. If the composition includes traditional
instruments that cannot be found in Taiwan, the applicant needs to provide the instruments for rehearsal and performing use, and to invite instrumentalists when needed.
The host country will ONLY consider applications sent through ACL official members.
Any compositions previously submitted to any ACL music festivals cannot be submitted to this festival. The Applicant must submit one score (copied and bound). For electroacoustic compositions, one score or guide and the system plan must be submitted.
