Call for scores: SOUNZ and Westlake Community Project 2018

A collaboration between Westlake Symphony Orchestra and SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music.

The Westlake Symphony Orchestra is an accomplished school orchestra conducted by David Squire. The aim of this project is to encourage New Zealand composers at all career stages to have high quality works available for non-professional orchestras. By making these works available through SOUNZ Online orchestras will be able to watch and listen to repertoire they can programme and perform. The selected works will be recorded and filmed later in 2018 by SOUNZ, and one work may be performed by the Westlake Symphony Orchestra at the KBB Music Festival in August 2018.

Call for scores
SOUNZ is calling for scores from New Zealand composers suitable for a secondary school orchestra. The duration of the work should be 2-8 minutes. There is also the option of submitting a concerto work featuring a piano, viola or violin soloist.

The deadline for submission is 9am Monday 29 January 2018, and the parts for the selected works will be due at 9am Monday 5 March.

The 35th ACL Conference and Festival Young Composers Competition

Duration should be within 8 mins. A work written for a duet of two heterogeneous instruments, from the following – two groups respectively:
Group A: Violin, Viola, Violoncello and Double Bass
Group B: Flute/Picc, Oboe, B ♭ /A Clarinet and Bassoon

NOTE: only duos for one string instrument with one woodwind instrument will be considered.

Each ACL country shall select a Young Composer Representative under the age of 30 (born after
Oct. 19, 1987), and the score should be received by CANZ BEFORE 26 February 2018.

The host country will ONLY consider applications sent through ACL official members.

SOUNZ Commission for Emerging Players 2018

In May 2018 Orchestra Wellington and Arohanui Strings will be giving a performance at the Walter Nash Stadium in Lower Hutt. This commission is an opportunity for a composer to create a work of 4-5 minutes featuring the combined forces of Orchestra Wellington and Arohanui Strings. The resulting work will need to have separate parts at an appropriate level for Arohanui Strings, and be suitable for a concert that will include popular songs, arias and overtures.

Proposals for the commission from New Zealand composers should be emailed to info@sounz.org.nz by 9am Friday 8 December 2017. All applications will be forwarded to a panel facilitated by SOUNZ, and the succesful proposal will be announced on Monday 18 December 2017.

Conneticut Summerfest Contemporary Music Festival

Composers are invited to apply for the 2018 Conneticut Summerfest programme

Festival Composers will receive:
– Live and live-streamed premiere of newly composed work by one of three professional ensembles-in-residence
– High-quality, mastered audio of newly composed work in studio recording session
– Concert video recording from live premiere, featured on our YouTube channel
– Lessons with our world-class composition faculty members
– Dedicated rehearsal time with our ensembles-in-residence
– Attendance of guest lectures with leading music specialists
– Housing and meals for the duration of the festival

Applicants to Connecticut Summerfest’s Composition Program will be asked to submit two (2) representative scores and recordings, which are to be no longer than 15 minutes in combined duration. Acoustic and electronic/electroacoustic submissions will be accepted for adjudication. Because this is a blind application, submitted scores and recordings must not include the composer’s name, geographic location, or any information about commissioning parties. Submitted scores and recordings must not only omit this information in text on the score, it also must be omitted from file names and metadata. Failure to omit this information will lead to disqualification of application. Only audio files may be submitted– video files will not be accepted. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age on or before June 14, 2018.

Composers accepted to the program will be asked to compose a new work for one of our ensembles-in-residence to be rehearsed, premiered live, and performed in a recording session during the festival! The composer may choose to compose either an acoustic or electroacoustic work, as the festival will have access to a stereo sound system. Any additional equipment, software, or personnel the piece would need must be provided by the composer. Invited composers will have four private lessons, one with each of our Composition Faculty, and will be asked to give a presentation of their music at one of the daily composition seminars.

The 2018 Salvatore Martirano Memorial Composition Award

Eligibility: Any composer, regardless of age or nationality is eligible. Previous winners, faculty, and currently-enrolled students at the University of Illinois are ineligible for the competition.

Awards: First Prize cash award of $1000 and second prize cash award of $500 plus performances by the Illinois Modern Ensemble in the fall of 2018 on the 22nd Annual Martirano Award Concert at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of the University of Illinois. Additional awards and performances may be given at the discretion of the judges.

Judges: A panel of judges consisting of international composers and University of Illinois music composition faculty members will select the winning compositions. The winning composers are expected to attend the 22nd annual award concert and reception, and will be responsible for their transportation costs (the competition will provide lodging and some meals). The winning composers will assume full responsibility for providing adequate performance materials upon request.

Guidelines:

  1. Medium: Full scores of any style or aesthetic direction for 1-15 performers (including vocalists) may be submitted. Works for electronics and/or mixed media (including video), with or without instruments and voices, are eligible.
  1. Duration: 20 minutes maximum
  1. Limit: One entry per composer
  1. Entry fee: A non-refundable entry fee of twenty US dollars (20.00 USD) is paid online at the time of submission. All major credit cards are accepted.
  1. Anonymous Submission: The composer’s name must not appear on the score or in any accompanying materials submitted online.

Creative New Zealand/Jack C. Richards Composer-in-Residence at NZSM 2018-2019

Composers are invited to apply for the position of Creative New Zealand Composer-in- Residence at the New Zealand School of Music 2018–19.
Applicants should hold a current New Zealand passport or have been residing in New Zealand for the 12 months prior to the application deadline, and be composers of proven merit. The appointment will be for twelve months from 1 July 2018 to 31 June 2019, with a salary in the range of NZ$60,000–$70,000.

Partner organisations include: Orchestra Wellington, Lilburn Residence Trust, Centre for New Zealand Music (SOUNZ), Wai-te- ata Music Press, as well as numerous Wellington-based performers and ensembles who have expressed interest in working with the successful candidate.

The application should comprise a single application document (in either PDF or Microsoft Word format), that includes the following four sections, ideally in the following order:

1) A current CV, which must include your contact details, qualifications, compositional experience,
current employment status and a list of selected compositional output.

2) A Work Proposal. See below for more details.

3) A URL (or list of URLs) to an online portfolio/showreel of no more than 4 representative works. Notated compositions should include links to both scores and recordings. Franco Donatoni Competition for Young Composers

Composers of any nationality, born after 1st January 1982, are eligible to participate in the selection by submitting one (or more) composition(s) for an instrumental ensemble of between 5 and 12 performers by 10th January 2018.

An international jury will select by 15th February 2018 three compositions that will be performed by Divertimento Ensemble in Milan on 29th March within the 2018 Rondò concert season.

The three selected composers will then be asked to write a new composition for soprano, baritone and ensemble, whose duration must be between 8 and 12 minutes; the three new compositions will be performed during the 2019 Rondò concert season, on the occasion of the fifth edition of the ‘Franco Donatoni’ International Meeting for Young Composers. The selected composers (who will have delivered score and parts within the deadline foreseen by the rules) will take part in the rehearsals in Milan and will work in close contact with the musicians of the ensemble and the singers.

RULES

3. Original scores as well as scores that have already been published and/or performed are both eligible for submission. They should not be anonymous. If possible, they should be accompanied with a recording of the performance.

An international jury of five composers (Franck Bedrossian, Sandro Gorli, Mauro Lanza, Fabien Lévy andGabriele Manca) will select by 15th February 2018 three composers who will be invited to take part in the International Meeting. The selected composers will be personally informed, and the selection will also be announced on IDEA’s website by 16th February 2018.

5. The three chosen scores will be performed during Divertimento Ensemble’s 2018 Rondò concert season on March 29th, in Milan.

6. Each of the three selected composers will furthermore be invited to write a 8-12 minutes composition for soprano, baritono and ensemble with words by the Italian poet and writer Pier Paolo Pasolini. The score and the parts must be delivered by 31st December 2018.

7. The three new works will be performed by Divertimento Ensemble in 2019 in Milan, on the occasion of the fifth edition of the ‘Franco Donatoni’ International Meeting for Young Composers, within Divertimento Ensemble’s 2019 Rondò concert season.

8. The three selected composers will take part in the rehearsals of their new composition, working in close contact with musicians and singers. Each composer will be entitled to a reimbursement of Euro 1,000 gross, for travel, board and lodging expenses incurred.

9. Each applicant, by submitting his/her application to participate in the International Meeting, agrees unconditionally to be bound by these rules.

Divertimento Ensemble International Workshop for Young Composers

Applications are open for admission to Divertimento Ensemble’s fourth International Workshop for Young Composers (for ensemble). Up to 12 participants will be selected.

Interested composers, not exceeding the age of 35 (as of July 6th, 2018), should fulfill no later than November 30th, 2017 the form available online at the following link: http://idea.divertimentoensemble.it/application-form-iwyc-ensemble-2018/

A jury composed by the two tutors of the workshop together with two musicians of Divertimento Ensemble and their conductor will select no later than December 12, 2017 the twelve admitted composers.

Admitted composers will be asked to send, no later than May 15th, 2018 the score and the instrumental parts of the piece with which they will participate in the workshop.

The instrumental ensemble, of minimum six performers, will be included among the following instruments: flute (also piccolo, alto flute and bass flute), oboe (also English horn), clarinet (also also E flat and bass clarinet), two violins,viola, cello, piano and percussion (percussion instruments must be previously agreed).

The piece must not exceed 7 minutes duration. This can be a new composition written specifically for the workshop, or an existing composition (including the one that has been submitted if in line with the instrumental ensemble).

During the ten days of the workshop, participants will have individual lessons with the two tutors and with the conductor of the ensemble to discuss their scores or other pieces, as well as working sessions with the performers of the ensemble; they shall listen to the rehearsals of their own work and of all the programmed pieces. They will participate in the scheduled masterclasses.

All the compositions will be performed in two public concerts in Bobbio on July 14 and 15, 2018. A maximum of three compositions will be selected after the performances in Bobbio to be included in the Rondò 2019 concert season (Milan, January-June 2019).

It is possible to take part in the workshop as observers.

The workshop overall schedule includes the following time/activities to be divided among all the participants:
– 36 hours of rehearsal with the ensemble (to be divided among all the scores)
– 30 hours of individual lessons with each of the two tutors (to be divided among all the participants)
– 6 hours of individual meetings with the conductor of the ensemble (to be divided among all the participants)
– 4 hours of individual meetings with the musicians
– 2 hours of masterclasses by each of the two tutors
– 3 hours of masterclasses by Daniele Ghisi*

ISCM Call for Works: Beijing 2018

Dear Members of CANZ,

The official Call for Works is now released for ISCM’s World Music Days 2018, to be held in Beijing, China, from May 19 – 26, 2018 in association with the 2018 Beijing Modern Music Festival.

This very exciting 8-day festival and international gathering promises the chance to hear music from over 50 countries played by world-class performers, and unprecedented networking opportunities amongst the global community of composers and performers of new music.

CANZ is the official NZ member (Section) of the ISCM, and will be selecting and submitting six works as our Official Submission. We now invite members to submit works to CANZ for consideration. The deadline for submission to CANZ is Friday 8 December 2018. Please send all materials electronically to <president@canz.net.nz>.. Receipt of your submission will be acknowledged. If for some reason you do not receive such acknowledgement, please send an inquiry to <chrisgendall@gmail.com>.

You must be a current member of CANZ to make a submission to our official NZ entry (if you wish to join CANZ, please see http://canz.net.nz/join-canz/ ) Preference will be given to shorter works, and works composed after 2012. The Official Submission from CANZ will include six works fitting at least four of the 11 submission categories. It is essential that you ensure your entry matches the specifications for one of the categories, described below:

1. Symphony orchestra (without choir; with or without soloist such as piano, violin, viola, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, percussion, tenor and soprano, etc.) (2+1.2+1.2+1.2+1.-4.3.3.1.- timp.perc4-pno-harp-strings). Duration max. 20 min.

2. Traditional Chinese Music Orchestra (without choir; with or without soloists such as erhu, pipa, zheng, ruan, bamboo flute, suona, sheng, percussion, etc.)

4. Youth mixed choir (70 members; four voices for mix choir: soprano, alto, tenor and bass). Duration max. 8 min.

5. String Quartet. Duration max. 15 min.

6. Piano Trio for piano, violin and cello; or Piano Trio for piano, clarinet, and violin or viola. Duration max. 15 min.

7. Chamber Music pieces for quintet: flute (also alto flute and bass-flute), clarinet (also bass-clarinet), piano, violin and cello. Duration max. 15 min.

8. Chamber Music pieces for septet or octet: instruments to be chosen from violin, viola, cello, bass, piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, and percussion, no more than one of each. Duration max 10 min.

9. Pieces for violin, flute, tenor, or soprano, with or without piano. Pieces for piano solo are also accepted. Duration max 8 min.

10. Chamber Opera. No more than 2 actors, and no more than 20 regular instruments from symphony orchestra. Concert version. Duration max 45 min.

11. Computer Music, for fixed media or with live performance (for voice or no more than 4 instruments to be chosen from 1 flute, 1 oboe, 1 clarinet, 1 bassoon, 1 horn, 1 trumpet, 1 trombone, 2 violins, 1 viola, 1 violoncello, 1 double-bass), up to 8 channels. Duration max 15 min.
Please note, the listed instruments are standard instruments, but the use of non-standard instruments is possible (additional expenses covered by the submitter). More updated information on the categories will be supplied on the festival website later

In order to submit works in the official NZ entry, CANZ requires the following:

– The score (PDF document preferred), or audio/video documentation if the work does not have a written score.

– An audio or video recording of the work (if possible)

– Short biography of the composer in English (maximum 150 words).
Programme notes for the submitted work in English (maximum 150 words).

– Technical rider specifying all equipment necessary to perform the work.

– Proof of nationality of the composer (copy of passport)

– High-resolution digital photograph of the composer.

– The composer’s personal and contact information: Given names; Family name; Name as it should appear in the programme; Date of birth; full Mailing address; Gender; Phone no.; email address; website (if applicable); signature.

– Composition Information: Title; Submission Category; Accurate duration; Year of composition.

Nief-Norf Summer Festival 2018 Call for Scores

Each year the NNSF Call for Scores invites submissions of contemporary scores for chamber ensemble that are performed by Performance Fellows at the annual Nief-Norf Summer Festival. Composers of selected compositions will be invited to attend the festival and coach festival students and faculty in the preparation of the work.The 2018 NNSF Call for Scores invites submissions of contemporary scores related to the research conference theme of New Asia. The call is open to all composers without restriction, and the connection to the theme may pertain to the music, the instrumentation, the subject matter, or the identity of the composer, and is open to creative interpretation.

Submissions are invited of works for chamber ensemble (3-12 players) for any of the following instruments:
flute (all family), clarinet (all family), oboe, bassoon, saxophone (all family), trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba, piano, harp, percussion, guitar (acoustic or electric), violin, viola, cello, double bass, voice

Composer-performers using instruments not on this list, especially non-Western instruments, may also submit works that include themselves as a performer.

Any of the following score are welcome: scores requiring two or more of the same instrument (such as percussion ensemble or string quartet); works including improvisation, electronics, indeterminate notation or instrumentation; works that have been performed, recorded or published. All interested composers, at any point in their career are eligible to apply.

Submission fee: $15 for the first composition, $10 for each additional work (up to five).
