Adam Cello Young Composers Competition

Adam Cello New Zealand
Young Composers Competition

The Adam International Cello Festival Trust Board are pleased to announce the launch of the second Young Composers’ Competition to run alongside Adam Cello New Zealand, the 7th Adam International Cello Festival and Competition which will take place at the Arts Centre in Christchurch from 27th March to 3 April 2009

The competition is open to composers under the age of 30 on 1 November 2008 and are enrolled in or are graduates from a New Zealand secondary or tertiary level School of Music. There is no lower age limit.

The competition brief is to compose a short (31?2 max), encore-like piece, ideally taking into account the repertoire for the 2nd round of the competition (Beethoven – Sonata op 102 No 1 or Sonata op 102 No 2 and one of the following Sonatas: Rakhmaninov, Miaskovsky No 2, Prokofiev, Schnittke No 1), either in a way of quotations/allusions, or a free, cadenza-like fantasy. The piece should be based on a theme from Haydn to commemorate the 200th anniversary of his death.

The winning composition will be a compulsory requirement in the round two repertoire of the 7th ADAM International Cello Festival and Competition and will be performed at the finals gala concert with Christchurch Symphony Orchestra on 3rd April 2009.

The competition will be judged by pianist and composer Gao Ping and Professor Alexander Ivashkin. A prize of NZ $1000 will be awarded for the winning composition.

Entry form and terms and conditions can be downloaded from www.adamcello.co.nz. Entries close 1 November 2009 with the winner to be announced on the 15 November 2008.
