CANZ Composers Conference 12-13 April 2014

CANZ COMPOSERS CONFERENCE
12-13 April 2014

presented by the Composers Association of New Zealand
with the support of the School of Music, University of Auckland

This conference, an initiative of CANZ, is intended to foster discussion and research with relevance to composers working in New Zealand today. The first CANZ Composers Conference, at which 16 presentations were given, was held in Wellington in September 2008. (The abstracts from this conference are listed in Canzona 2008, vol. 29 no. 50).

Submissions for papers/presentations are welcome from all members. We strongly encourage student members to make submissions.

The conference will focus on issues relevant to current compositional practice in New Zealand. Areas of interest for presentations include:

– Composer presentations on working methodologies/strategies/concepts
– Analyses of recent NZ composition
– Theoretical concepts appropriate to recent NZ composition
– Sociocultural or historical contextualisation of recent NZ composition
– Political discussions relevant to NZ composers
– Composition for film and television
– Music for young people / in the community

Papers on topics outside these areas, but falling within the scope of the general theme of ‘current compositional practice’, are also invited to be submitted. Please note, presentations will be limited to 20 minutes, with 10 minutes discussion.

A formal call for submissions will be issued in August 2013, and abstracts will be due in late 2013.

The conference will also feature a concert of work by CANZ composers. A call for scores will be issued in August, and pieces will be selected by a jury of CANZ members.

More information will be available soon on the CANZ website (www.canz.net.nz) and in the next issue of Canzonetta. Please email the conveners (Samuel Holloway and Leonie Holmes) for further information or to offer your services as a volunteer.
